Spring and Summer Give Way

BTN stage at the July 27, 2013, BTN Big10K in Chicago. (Fouad Egbaria)

It's been a long spring and summer (well, it's all relative), and so I haven't been doing a whole lot here since the basketball season ended. That is regrettable to me, even if this isn't exactly the most widely read thing in existence, but so it goes.

My year at Medill is almost up, and I'm in the midst of a hunt for a job in the world of journalism, perhaps a funny thing to mention on, you know, a blog of all things. While I never imagined that I would go into journalism when I first started this thing before my senior year at Michigan in the summer of 2010, I've come to realize that my semi-regular ramblings here have cemented the notion that I can, sometimes, write well about sports, and that I might want to do this for a living. Then again, so does everyone else.

In any case, while one thing comes to an end, another will soon begin. If you don't know what that thing is, then you are probably in the wrong place.

This offseason was a strange one. With the looming specter of endless school work and the need to secure a job, paired with the Chicago Bulls' short but exciting playoff run and the Blackhawks' run to yet another Stanley Cup, this offseason flew by with startling swiftness. I'm sitting here on August 2, 2013, and Michigan's next football game is no longer an abstract mile marker on the horizon; it is a certainty. On August 31, Michigan will take the field again. The result will matter. People will be keeping score.

The offseason has been another installment in the "Era of Good Feelings." Other than ongoing recruiting pyrotechnics, very little has happened, minus the injury of Jake Ryan; even he is miraculously predicted to return at some point in October. With the passing of Big Ten Media Days, we've gotten our fill of meticulously curated hype. Darboh, Chesson, Clark; as always, expectations will weigh on some more than others.

Michigan has holes to fill and questions to answer, just like every other squad in college football. Who will bring the pass rush? Can Michigan run the ball when it needs to (or at all)? What will Fitzgerald Toussaint bring coming off of a fairly brutal injury? How will Michigan's last line of defense perform without mistake-eraser Jordan Kovacs? Can Devin Gardner take the next step as the unquestioned starter (something which has been in the cards for so long it might have been mentioned in the Epic of Gilgamesh)?

These are all valid questions, and in considering them we've all surely come up with our individual record predictions. What mine happens to be doesn't really matter, but I think it's safe to say that as long as Michigan avoids disaster at certain positions, 2013 will prove more successful than 2012.

Michigan gets Ohio State, Nebraska and Notre Dame at home but must travel to Michigan State, Penn State, Northwestern (which might not be as much of a "home" game as it has been) and Iowa, who is down but has given Michigan trouble at Kinnick the last two times. Michigan has yet to lose at home under Brady Hoke, and will need to continue that trend in 2013 if it hopes to make its first trip to Indianapolis.

And so, we enter this season with a formless batch of wholesale uncertainty mixed with quiet confidence. We know Devin Gardner can play, but can the Wolverines run the ball? We know Michigan can win at home, but can they win on the road? We know Michigan has young talent in spots where it didn't exist in recent years, but will it grow up fast enough to make a difference in 2013?

Nobody has these answers but the Future, which thus far has a perfect record with respect to not disseminating spoilers. On the flip side, we'll have to keep waiting. Then again, four more weeks is but a moment in time.

Shameless Self-Promotion Time: Offseason B1G Preview

Hello there. It's been a little while. We are only 40 days from Michigan football, so it's probably a good time to at least attempt to revive this thing after a long, depressing spring/summer of White Sox baseball.

Anyway, I haven't been writing much but I do have a few previews to share from over at Maize n Brew:

  • On July 8, I talked about my grad school team of choice, the Northwestern Fightin' Warrior Poets. Yes, fan of a big name team, Northwestern is a contender for the division this season. This is always a team to watch, but it's usually more fun when they're not playing your team...that is, unless your team decides to engage in some late game heroics.
  • With a new coach coming into Madison, I took a look at the squad tucked between Lakes Mendota and Monona. The secondary, offensive line depth and the need to settle on a single quarterback are the primary points of concern for the 2013 iteration of the Wisconsin Badgers.
  • And finally, I talked a bit about the Michigan State Spartans on June 24, a squad with a fairly considerable range of potential outcomes. The defense will once again be strong, but will it be strong enough to carry an offense now without star back Le'Veon Bell for another season? The Spartans' average margin of defeat in 2012 was slight, so improvement upon last season's 6-6 regular season mark is likely. However, if the Spartans are to win the division, it goes without saying that Andrew Maxwell (or Connor Cook) must provide better play from under center.
So, there you go. Ohio State is up next week to close out MnB's offseason preview series. After that, we'll all take the highway exit into It's-Almost-Football-Time-Land.

Revisiting Alabama (Links)

We sit three weeks and a day away from the Alabama game, a period of time that seems insignificant but will come to feel like a lifetime. Anyway, that sounds like just enough time to read a bunch of preview-type thing about Alabama, right? Since I'm sure that many missed them the first time around, here are my preview posts on each Alabama position group. I frittered away a not insignificant amount of time writing them, so, yes, YOU WILL READ THEM. YOU WILL.

Here they are, all in one place for your convenience:
So, there you have it. It's a lot to read, I admit, but that's why I'm posting this now. I'll talk about Alabama one last time when I put up some sort of preview for the game three weeks from now, but for now I will leave you with this. After that, I promise I won't make any more Golden Flake references. A couple of items in those posts are now obsolete. For example, backup QB Phillip Sims transferred a long time ago, and WR Duron Carter gave up the ghost of qualifying at Bama (he has since transferred to play for Carl Pelini at Florida Atlantic). Lastly, VHT freshman receiver Chris Black will be out 3-4 months with a shoulder injury. I'm not sure how much of a contributor he would have been. While Christion Jones, Kenny Bell, and Kevin Norwood are good players, I'm sure that Black would have seen a few snaps on 9/1. Black snagged a nice 44-yard TD during Alabama's spring game, so while it is not a huge one in the grand scheme of things, it is an unfortunate loss for Alabama (obviously, best wishes to him in his recovery). Look for Alabama's other early enrollee wideout, Amari Cooper, to take those snaps.

Otherwise, mostly everything else should be up to date. Of course, if any depth chart changes occur during fall camp, I'll make sure to mention them.

Remember, guys: Stephen Garcia once beat Alabama. It can be done. Here is 2 hours and 23 minutes of Stephen Garcia beating Alabama.

p.s. I meant to mention this before when Alabama fans were first discovering these posts but...Alabama fans, trust me, the irony of a blog called "Holdin' the Rope" talking about Alabama football is not lost on me.

Shameless Self-Promotion Time

Over at Maize n Brew I was asked to write something about Minnesota football; here it is. If you missed my post last week on Indiana, here is that one as well. I never imagined that I would write approximately 4,500 total words about Indiana and Minnesota, but I did. I guess this is what happens when you are a college football fan and it is the month of May.

I highly suggest that all of you visit MnB as these preview weeks continue on into the summer. There's a lot of good work being done over there and I recommend all of it.

On an unrelated note, here is this week's, as promised, Michigan-centric Shutdown Fullback episode. WATCH IT:
